The double crochet stitch is one of the basic crochet stitches each beginner should learn. The abbreviation is DC in most patterns. With this basic stitch you can make scarves, shawls, hats, potholders and blankets. Below you can find my free tutorial to learn the double crochet stitch.
Double crochet: the basics
The double crochet stitch is taller than single crochet stitches and not quite as tight. It’s about the heigh of two single crochet stitches op top of each other. Usually patterns will start a new row with 3 chains which count as the first double crochet stitch. Starting chains are used to raise the yarn to the correct height when you start a new row.
Front and back loops
Double crochet stitches are worked under both loops of a stitch. Sometimes a pattern will tell you to work in the front or back loop only. The ‘front loop only‘ (FLO) is the loop closest to you, and the ‘back loop only‘ (BLO) is the loop farthest away from you. Working in the FLO or BLO will create a fun ribbing effect.
How to make a double crochet stitch
The double crochet stitch starts with a ‘yarn over’, meaning you’ll wrap yarn over your hook before inserting the hook in the stitch. Then, insert your hook in the stitch and pull yarn through the two loops on your hook. Finish the stitch by yarning over and pulling the hook through the last two stitches on your hook.
Don’t worry if this doesn’t make sense right now. With my photo and video tutorial below you’ll see that it’s a fun and simple stitch. Enjoy, and before you know, you will be an expert!
