As a beginner, the very first thing you’ll have to learn is how to make a slip knot. Whether you want to crochet a simple potholder, jar cover, shawl, hat…. All crochet projects start with a slip knot, so it is very important to master it. The abbreviation for a slip knot is SK, chain is CH and yarn over is YO in most patterns. Below you can find my free tutorial to learn making slip knots and chains.

Before you start: the basics

The slip knot secures the yarn on your hook and makes you ready to start any stitch. Before you start, always read the instructions carefully because the pattern will tell you what yarn weight and hook size you’ll need to use. If you’re not following a pattern and just want to try a few stitches, you might want to start with DK weight yarn and crochet hook 4.5mm. Use a color which clearly shows the stitches; definitely don’t use black!

With my photo and video tutorial below you’ll see that it’s not that hard. Enjoy, and before you know, you will be an expert!
